Isla Apothecaryn perustaja Kate Protopapas vieraili kesällä Jolien Helsingin toimistolla. Pyysimme Katea kertomaan meille yrittäjätarinansa. Samalla haastattelimme Katea myöskin Isla Apothecaryn brändistä ja sen tulevaisuudesta.
Kate Protopapasilla on kyproslaiset sukujuuret, mutta hän asuu ja työskentelee Lontoossa. Katen kiinnostus luonnonkosmetiikkaan sai alkunsa Katen ollessa vielä hyvin nuori. Tuolloin hän ajautui pitkään antibioottikierteeseen terveydellisistä syistä. Lopulta hänen terveydentilansa heikkeni niin, etteivät antibiootit enää toimineet ja aiheuttivat enemmän haittaa kuin hyötyä. Pitkäaikaisen sairastelun seurauksena Kate löysi itsensä lopulta homeopaatin odotushuoneesta. Ratkaisuja alkoi hiljalleen löytyä, ja kuntoutumisen kautta Kate innostui holistisesta hyvinvoinnista. Kate alkoi tutustua eteerisiin öljyihin ja aromaterapian saloihin. Hänen kehonsa reagoi myönteisesti erilaisiin hoitoihin. Vaihtoehtoinen terveys- ja hyvinvointiseikkailu oli lopulta paljon enemmän kuin avain fyysiseen terveyteen. Kokonaisvaltainen hyvä olo aiheutti Katessa hurmioituneen tunteen – rakkaus luonnollisiin parannuskeinoihin ja kehonhoitoon oli syttynyt!
Kate ei osannut koskaan unelmoida yrittäjyydestä. Kolmenkympin kulmilla Kate oli jumissa hohdottomassa työssä ja alkoi vakavissaan miettiä, miksi ei hyödyntäisi intohimoaan jollakin tavalla myös työelämässä. Hän oli viettänyt jo useita vuosia seilaillen eri toimialoilla markkinoinnin parissa. Jatkuvasti hän huomasi haikailevansa isomman muutoksen perään. Into ja usko silloisiin tehtäviin oli kadonnut, ja sivussa innostus luonnonkosmetiikkaan yltyi yltymistään. Kate rakasti käyttää vapaa-aikaansa luonnollisen ihonhoidon ja puhtaiden raaka-aineiden tutkimiseen, joka synnytti lopulta ajatuksen Isla Apothecarysta. Lopulta Kate uskalsi kokeilla.
Isla Apothecary syntyi 2015. Ajoitus oli täydellinen. Jo taaperon ikäisenä Isla on ehtinyt keräämään hyvin lojaalin asiakaskunnan. Isla on onnistunut häikäisemään upealla, ruusukultaisella designillaan ja rikkaista raaka-aineista käsintehdyillä, hemmotteluun sopivilla tuotteilla. Myös miehet hankkivat paljon Islaa – useimmiten lahjaksi. Kate kertoi meille tekevänsä edelleen Islan jokaisen tuotteen itse aina raaka-aineiden valinnasta pakkaustarrojen kiinnittämiseen. Hän saa apua perheeltään ja ystäviltään. Yrityksen alkuinvestoinnit ovat vaatineet paljon rahaa ja työtä. Rakkaus ja sydämen palo alaa kohtaan kantavat Katea, vaikka työtä olisi välillä hurjasti. Hän on onnellinen Islan saamasta palautteesta ja suosiosta, ja se lämmittää suuresti silloinkin, kun työpäivät venyvät yöhön.

1. What is the story and “the Beauty Secret” of Isla Apothecary?
The story is about my experiences and successes in healing with high-performing natural ingredients and aromatherapy. They are good for my skin and general wellbeing.
The secret is an authentic expression of my belief in the simplicity of quality natural ingredients blended for their synergy.
2. Who are You and how did You become a beauty entrepreneur?
My background is in marketing and PR. For many years as I was moving through different jobs and industries, and I felt something was missing. The more I wanted to feel greater passion and belief in my work, the closer I got to the possibility of it.
It was 2014 when I began to think seriously about my passion for aromatherapy and natural beauty as a business, doing various courses, experimentations, and research, which finally culminated in the launch of Isla Apothecary at the end of 2015.
3. Tell us something about the products? Do You have a favorite Isla product and why?
My intention for the products has always been about the ritualistic experience and therapeutic value they offer. I want them to be a reminder to take time for ourselves, with consciously chosen products by our side.
For the body, my “go to product” is the Coffee + Cinnamon Body Polish – when used mindfully, it can get sluggish circulation moving, promote lymphatic drainage, buff the skin, rid it of surface impurities, and can help to maintain that protective moisture barrier. I love using it in the morning as it’s so invigorating!
For the face, a few drops of Immortelle Scar + Blemish Oil massaged in to my face at night has really nourished my skin, as well as making it more resilient and less prone to breakouts.
4. How would you like to develop the brand in the future?
Every day we are working towards bringing natural and organic products to a wider audience with our product range. This part of the beauty industry is already moving away from being niche as more people discover the beauty of natural and organic products. It’s very exciting to be a part of it and my hope is that we can continue contributing to this important area.
5. Do You have plans for any new products?
Since launching, we have added several new products to the line, and most recently Jasmine Sunset Radiance Body Oil. Right now we are very focused on the range we have, although, it is always very tempting to add new products after a creative period of mixing and testing! Having said that, there are some very limited edition products that we have worked on with some local makers, which we’ll be revealing in the coming months.
